I started evaluating my skills, opportunities, and all the “transferable talents” that I could use to create an opportunity for myself. One of the first things I remembered was my first job right out of high school and how happy I was doing that work. Working for the State of Texas – Public Health Department, I was responsible for creating posters, displays and materials for hospitals, health departments, and state fairs. I began to remember how much I enjoyed the opportunity to create and distribute the materials that I had actually made. I worked there until I moved away to go to college, where I studied sociology, as my goal was to be a social worker.
As a Social Worker for a school for “special needs” children, I worked with families that needed assistance. I enjoyed this work, but discovered that my salary didn’t support my needs. So, at the suggestion of my supervisor, I went back to school and became a Teacher.
The best part of teaching for me was making bulletin boards and creating teaching material and I began making and selling them to the teachers in my school.
The next job, I remembered having passion show up again, was when I was teaching “interviewing and resume writing skills” to people getting out of school. It was my responsibility to create the curriculum, teach it, and help these individuals get jobs. Creating the training and teaching materials was exciting and created an opportunity for me to explore how to help these individuals in the best way possible.
You might be beginning to see the pattern. I really didn’t see this pattern until I took the time to build my own Career Plan 2 bulletin board in 2009. I had forgotten about the passion and enjoyment I received from these experiences. My current career had taken me away from talents and skills that were just part of “who I really am” and “what I have to offer”.
I enjoyed many aspects of being a recruiter all these years, not the least of which making a nice income. However, since that aspect of the job seemed to have disappeared, I needed to create an alternative income for myself.
This past couple of years have been a long journey of discovering who I am, what I have to offer, and much more. Luckily, I do enjoy learning new things and am open to discovering new things about myself. Not only have I had to learn how to work within the technical aspects of the internet but also how to discover the hidden treasures within me that I can use to create alternate and hopefully multiple options of income for future.
